Windsurfing: Fraisthorpe Wind Direction: NNE Wind Stength: 20-30mph Surf / Sea State: Waves Air Temperature: 14 Sea Temperature: OK Weather: Sunny Max Speed: Distance Covered:
The Met Office recorded NNE all day for Bridlington compared to the NE and
ENE forecast by Windguru GFS and WRF. Fraisthorpe beach must face due East
so it should have been easy getting out with the winds more cross-shore
than on-shore - it was not easy. You had to bear away loads to get going
with the strong downwind current and the bigger walls of white water would
stop you and you then had to generate some speed again to face the next
wave. I was stuggling to keep the board tracking until I moved the lines
back, edged the mast forward a little and raised the boom a fair bit - much
more balanced, but I had wasted a lot of energy.
Once on the outside you could relax a little and make some ground back
upwind as the current must have been less. Coming back in you could pick up
the swells early, but the cross chop from the local wind effect made the
faces really bumpy - not too bad on the small board, but I am sure I was
airborn at times. The faces were cleaner further in and I had some nice
backside rides - smooth bottom turns and turning off the white water at the
top - fantastic.
A superb day in the sunshine. Lots of families kept arriving, but they soon
left when they felt the sand blowing down the beach. Loads of space on the
water - 6 boards and 2 kites out at any one time. Absolutely spent when I
packed up - need more time in the waves to improve.
